What happens at a first voice lesson?
Typically, at a first lesson, I like to take time to chat with the student and parent about what they are hoping to get out of voice lessons. I ask what kind of music the student enjoys and what kind of musical training (like choir) they have already experienced. I also ask if they have any questions for me. If the student has a particular song that they enjoy singing, I love for them to sing that for me. However, not all folks have a song they feel ready to sing- and that is OK, too! I will vocalize the student as they are comfortable to get an idea of their range, and introduce a song to learn together if they did not bring a favorite song. It’s very important to me that the student feels safe and welcomed and at ease. Each student is beautifully unique, and I enjoy curating a lesson experience that meets the needs of each individual. -Dr. Cornwell
